Incident:

2018. Pledges of Allegiance exhibition, University of Kansas, Lawrence.


In 2018, the artwork was exhibited at the University of Kansas as part of the Pledges of Allegiance art project. The university’s chancellor ordered it to be removed because some students found it offensive and considered it an attack on the country’s patriotic values. The flag was relocated, away from the public area.


Biography:

Josephine Meckseper (Lilienthal, 1964) is a German visual artist based in New York. In her work, she exposes the paradoxes of consumer culture by combining products with images of historical and political events. Her pieces can be found in the permanent collections of museums, such as MoMA in New York and Migros in Zurich.
