In 2019, this artwork was removed from an exhibition in Kyrgyzstan, by order of the Ministry of Culture that declared it pornographic and incompatible with the country’s traditions. The museum’s director resigned after receiving threats. The Kazakh artist has worked repeatedly with the female body and has experienced other cases of censorship.


Biography:

Zoya Falkova (Almaty) is a multidisciplinary artist from Kazakhstan interested in deconstructing gender stereotypes and practices stemming from colonialism. Her work has been exhibited mainly in Eastern Europe and Central Asia.
